The Apple Grove, a vibrant and dynamic heart of Botley School's Forest School, is more than just a collection of trees; it's a living tapestry woven with threads of history, nature, and hands-on learning. This dedicated space, nestled at the edge of the lower field, offers a rich and inspiring environment where children can explore, discover, and forge a deep connection with the natural world.
A Growing Legacy: From Wartime Resilience to a Thriving Orchard
The story of the Apple Grove is rooted in a time of challenge and resilience. During the Second World War, the school's lower field was transformed into a "Dig for Victory" allotment, a vital resource that provided food for the school and the local community. Seven apple trees, planted during this period, stand as silent witnesses to this history, their branches reaching towards the sky as a reminder of the past. These venerable trees offer welcome shade in the summer months and, in autumn, bestow a generous harvest of apples, providing a tangible link between past and present and enriching lessons with the fruits of their labour.
In 2000, the school recognised the unique potential of this space and expanded its Forest School provision to include the Apple Grove. This dedicated area, at the far end of the lower field, was thoughtfully developed to maximise its value as an outdoor learning environment. A fire circle shelter was constructed, creating a warm and inviting focal point for gatherings, storytelling, and shared experiences. A teaching bench was also added, providing a space for more structured learning activities amidst the natural beauty of the Grove. New trees, carefully selected to enhance biodiversity, including rowan, oak, and whitebeam, were planted, adding layers of texture and interest to the landscape.
While time has gracefully aged the original apple trees, leaving only five to tell their tale, their legacy lives on. In 2022, as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, the school planted a new orchard of young fruit trees at the end of the lower field. This act of planting is a gift to future generations, a promise of bountiful harvests and a continuation of the Grove's rich history.
A Hub of Exploration and Wonder
Today, the Apple Grove is a bustling hub of activity, a place where learning comes alive. It has evolved into a dynamic and purpose-built space for Forest School sessions, offering a wealth of opportunities for children to engage with nature. The mud kitchen, a source of endless fascination, invites children to explore the properties of earth, water, and natural materials, fostering creativity and sensory exploration. The tree swing, a symbol of joy and freedom, provides a playful connection with the surrounding trees. Hidden dens offer opportunities for collaborative building, imaginative role-play, and a sense of ownership within the natural environment. Sandpits offer a different tactile experience, encouraging exploration and play.
Throughout the Grove, a rich tapestry of fauna, flora, and fungi awaits discovery, nurturing a sense of wonder and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the interconnectedness of life.
The Apple Grove is a place where history, nature, and learning intertwine seamlessly, creating a truly magical and enriching experience for every child who ventures into its embrace.
