Building Your Child's Self-Esteem

At Botley School, we know how important it is for children to feel good about themselves. When children have healthy self-esteem, they're more likely to be happy, confident, and successful in all areas of their lives. This page is dedicated to providing you with resources and tips to help your child develop a strong sense of self-worth.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves. It's our overall sense of value and worth. Children with high self-esteem tend to:

  • Believe in themselves and their abilities.
  • Be more resilient when faced with challenges.
  • Have positive relationships with others.
  • Be more willing to try new things.

Tips for Building Self-Esteem:

  • Show unconditional love and acceptance: Let your child know that you love them for who they are, not just for what they do.
  • Praise effort, not just achievement: Focus on your child's hard work and perseverance, rather than just the end result.
  • Encourage independence: Give your child opportunities to make their own choices and take on responsibilities.
  • Help them identify their strengths: Encourage your child to explore their talents and interests.
  • Teach them to cope with mistakes: Help your child see mistakes as learning opportunities.
  • Model positive self-esteem: Show your child that you value yourself and your own abilities.
  • Create a supportive home environment: Make sure your child feels safe, loved, and respected at home.
