Unleashing Creativity: Art and Design at Botley School

Vision Statement:

"Developing self-expression, creativity and the ability to interpret the world around us as global citizens."

Introduction:

At Botley School, we believe that art and design are vital components of a well-rounded education. Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to ignite creativity, foster imagination, and develop pupils' artistic skills and appreciation. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment where children can explore a wide range of artistic techniques and materials, express themselves freely, and develop their unique artistic voices.

Our Aims in Art and Design:

Through our Art and Design curriculum, we aim to:

  • Develop pupils' creativity and imagination.
  • Equip pupils with a wide range of artistic skills and techniques.
  • Foster an appreciation of art from different cultures and periods.
  • Encourage pupils to express themselves freely and confidently.
  • Develop pupils' critical thinking and problem-solving skills through artistic exploration.

Key Stage Breakdown:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): In the Early Years, art and design are integrated into all areas of learning. Children are encouraged to explore different materials and techniques through play-based activities, developing their fine motor skills and creative expression. Activities might include painting, drawing, collage, and working with clay.
  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2): In Key Stage 1, pupils begin to develop their artistic skills in a more structured way. They learn about colour, shape, and texture, and explore a range of media, including drawing, painting, printing, and sculpture. They are introduced to the work of famous artists and designers and encouraged to respond to their work.
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6): In Key Stage 2, pupils further develop their artistic skills and knowledge. They explore more complex techniques and materials, such as watercolour painting, mixed media, and 3D construction. They learn about different artistic styles and movements and develop their ability to analyse and evaluate artwork. They are also encouraged to develop their own personal artistic style.

Examples of Activities and Projects:

Throughout the year, pupils participate in a variety of exciting art and design projects. These might include:

  • Creating observational drawings of natural forms.
  • Designing and making sculptures using recycled materials.
  • Painting landscapes in the style of a famous artist.
  • Exploring printmaking techniques.
  • Designing and creating costumes for school productions.

Resources and Facilities:

Botley School is proud to offer excellent resources and facilities for art and design. We have a dedicated art studio equipped with a wide range of materials and tools. We also make use of the school's outdoor environment for inspiration and outdoor art projects.
