The Quad

Surrounded by the original 1930s school building, The Quad is a unique, enclosed outdoor space. Unlike the vast openness of the woods, this secure courtyard offers a safe haven where children can experience the freedom of Forest School without the overwhelming sensory input of the wider outdoors.

Forest School for the Enhanced Pathway

This space is the home of our specialised sessions led by Mrs Lica for our Cherry and Rowan classes.

Mrs Lica champions a sensory-first approach, believing that every child deserves the freedom to explore nature on their own terms. By bringing the "wild" into this secure environment, she creates a space where children can play freely and safely.

  • Sensory Exploration: Mrs Lica uses natural materials—such as pine cones, crunching leaves, textured bark, and cool water—to create tactile experiences that engage the senses in a calming way.

  • Freedom to Play: Within the safety of the Quad's four walls, children are given the autonomy to lead their own learning. Whether they are transporting water, creating patterns with stones, or simply lying on the grass watching the clouds, they have the freedom to be themselves.

  • Natural Creativity: There are no plastic toys here. Instead, children use loose parts found in nature to build, create, and imagine, fostering deep engagement and problem-solving skills.

A Community Project with a Story

For many years, this central courtyard was overgrown and unusable. In 2024, thanks to the incredible generosity of the family of Eileen Penhaul—one of Botley School's founding pupils from 1938—the Quad was transformed.

Eileen remembered this school as her "safe space" during World War II. Her family's donation, along with hard work from staff and parent volunteers, has ensured it remains a safe space for a new generation.
