Championing Fundamental British Values

Our Commitment

In line with Department for Education guidance, we actively promote fundamental British values to equip our pupils for life in modern Britain.

We encourage children to treat everyone with respect and tolerance, regardless of their faith, race, or culture. We foster an understanding that while diverse perspectives exist, we are all subject to the rule of law.

The Five British Values at Botley School

1. Democracy

  • How we live it: We listen to our children's voices. Our School Council is elected by pupils, reflecting the British electoral system. Children are encouraged to express their opinions and vote on decisions that affect their school life.

2. The Rule of Law

  • How we live it: We teach the importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws: that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken.

3. Individual Liberty

  • How we live it: Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of participation in our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

4. Mutual Respect

  • How we live it: Our school ethos and behaviour policy revolve around Core Values such as 'Respect' and 'Teamwork'. Discussions and assemblies focus on what this means and how it is shown.

5. Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • How we live it: We enhance pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. We discuss differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and differences of family situations.
