W/B 04.05.20 - Suffixes: -ally and -ation

How does ‘basic’ become ‘basically’?

Look at the first 5 words. What is the same about them? The adjective ending in -ic  can become an adverb by adding -ally, e.g. comic + -ally = comically.

comic

basic

terrific

enthusiastic

frantic

Look at the final five words. What changes will happen to the spelling of the root word? Inform can become information (straightforward adding of the -ation suffix); prepare can become preparation (the final ‘e’ is dropped); multiply can become multiplication (the ‘y’ becomes ‘ic’).

inform

prepare

multiply

operate

admire

Can you add the correct suffix to the rest of the words? See the table below to check you are right.

comically

basically

terrifically

enthusiastically

frantically

information

preparation

multiplication

operation

admiration

Activities:

  1. Matching Pairs  - Print off or write the words on pieces of paper. Turn them face down so you can not see the words. To start with you might want to limit the number of words that are used, e.g. a maximum of five pairs. Can you match a root word (prepare) to the the correct root word+suffix (preparation)? If the card you turn over does not make a pair, then try again. How many pairs can you make in 30 seconds, a minute? Let us know your best score.
