Live lesson

In May 2026, we held our first ever ‘live lesson’ where parents, governors and members of the wider Acer Trust were invited to watch a lesson taking place in the school hall. In this case, Mr Jones and year 4 were showcasing how we have been trialling the use of 1:1 devices and the 'Showbie' software as tools to support teaching and learning in school.  The school invested in a class set of mini-iPads at the start of the year, with the support of Friends of Botley School (FOBS). Since then, all the teachers from year 2 to year 6 have had a chance to trial using the devices to support teaching and learning, with Mr Jones and year 4 leading the way.

During the live lesson, the children were taught maths. Each child had access to the slides on their iPads and could make notes and answer questions during the start of the lesson. They could then use these notes and answers during their independent work, if they needed to remind themselves of the learning in order to answer a question in their books. They could also work at their own pace, with extra challenge questions being set on the iPads, so pupils who completed the earlier questions more quickly had a challenge to deepen their learning.

While the lesson was taking place, Mrs Doran and Mrs Reid were able to quietly answer questions or explain what was happening to the parents, governors and guests who had come to observe the lesson.

The purpose of this live lesson was to give parents the opportunity to see how the devices were used in class, leading to a parent consultation on the use of 1:1 devices in school in the future.  Thank you to year 4 and Mr Jones for an inspiring lesson, and to the parents and guests who took the time to come and watch the lesson.
